Piercing aftercare

A little daily care makes a difference. Follow these steps and Evelina’s advice to help your new piercing heal. For tongue and lip piercings, follow the additional oral aftercare instructions provided at your appointment.

Care, step by step

  1. Clean hands first

Always wash your hands before cleaning your piercing. Avoid touching it unnecessarily.

  2. Clean gently

Clean your piercing twice daily using the aftercare solution provided by Evelina at your appointment. Follow her instructions and avoid over-cleaning.

  3. Dry carefully

Gently pat dry with clean, disposable gauze. Don’t scrub or pick off crusts.

  4. Leave the jewellery in place

Don’t twist, rotate or change the jewellery yourself during healing. If a shorter bar is needed once swelling settles, Evelina will advise you and fit it.

What to avoid

  • Avoid sleeping on your piercing or putting pressure on it.
  • Avoid catching the jewellery on clothing, towels or hair.
  • Avoid swimming pools, hot tubs and open-water swimming while healing.

During healing

Some tenderness, swelling, mild itching and pale fluid forming a crust can be normal. A piercing can look healed on the outside while still healing inside, so continue your aftercare and be patient.

When to seek help

Contact Evelina about irritation, bumps or jewellery that feels too tight. If the area becomes increasingly painful, hot or swollen, redness spreads, or you notice pus, fever or feel unwell, seek urgent advice from your GP or NHS 111. Leave the jewellery in unless a doctor tells you otherwise.

Common questions

When can I change my jewellery?

Wait until your piercing is fully healed and checked by Evelina. Fitting a shorter bar during healing is different from changing jewellery for appearance and should be done professionally.

Can I sleep on my new ear piercing?

Avoid direct pressure. A clean travel or piercing pillow with your ear resting in the opening can help you sleep comfortably without pressing on it.

How long will healing take?

Healing times vary depending on the piercing and the person, and many piercings take several months. Evelina will explain what to expect for yours.
