GOLDEN HANDS · AFTER YOUR VISIT
Tattoo aftercare
A little care makes a difference. Follow the steps below alongside the personalised instructions your artist gives you at your appointment.
Care, step by step
Follow your dressing instructions
Your artist will explain when and how to remove your dressing. This depends on the type used, so follow the instructions given at your appointment. If you’re unsure, contact the studio before removing or replacing it.
Keep it clean
Wash your hands before touching your tattoo. Once the dressing is removed, gently wash the area with lukewarm water and mild, fragrance-free soap. Rinse carefully and pat dry with a clean paper towel. Don’t scrub or rub.
Moisturise lightly
Once your dressing is off and the skin is clean and dry, apply a thin layer of the aftercare product recommended by your artist, as directed. A light layer is enough — avoid applying too much.
Let it heal naturally
Mild itching and flaking can be part of healing. Don’t scratch, pick scabs or pull away peeling skin. Wear clean, loose clothing that won’t rub against your tattoo.
What to avoid
- Until your tattoo is fully healed, avoid swimming, soaking in baths and using saunas.
- Keep the area out of direct sunlight and avoid sunbeds until fully healed.
- Avoid tight clothing and activities that cause rubbing or excessive sweating around the tattoo until fully healed.
- Don’t scratch, pick or peel the skin.
During healing
Some mild redness, tenderness and a little fluid can be normal at first. Your tattoo may then become itchy, flaky or slightly dull as the skin heals. Let any peeling happen naturally and continue the aftercare routine recommended by your artist. Symptoms should gradually improve rather than get worse.
When to seek help
For routine healing questions, contact Golden Hands — we’re happy to help. If redness spreads, pain or swelling increases, the area becomes hot, or you notice pus, fever or feel unwell, seek urgent advice from your GP or NHS 111. Don’t wait for a reply from the studio if you suspect an infection.
Common questions
Can I shower with my new tattoo?
Yes. Keep showers short and use lukewarm water. Follow your artist’s dressing instructions, avoid scrubbing or soaking the tattoo, and gently pat it dry afterwards.
Is itching and peeling normal?
Mild itching and peeling are common during healing. Don’t scratch or pick. Once your dressing is off, use a thin layer of your recommended aftercare product as directed.
What if my tattoo needs a touch-up?
Let your tattoo heal fully, then send the studio a clear photo or visit us. We’ll assess the tattoo and let you know whether a touch-up is needed.
